While LDR was not in competition at the US Street Nationals, there was a deeply paid back Radial vs. The World field on the tab and two LDR racers took full advantage of a early season event to use as testing. Scott Husted from New Port Richey, Florida and Lyle Barnett from Robbins, North Carolina made the trek to Bradenton, Florida to get the offseason bugs worked out. Husted has been a full time runner over the winter with events throughout the state of Florida. Barnett and team ‘Tooth Jerker’ thrashed until the last day to make it to the US Street Nationals on time to shake down the new changes done by Mag’s Fab Worx.
As qualifying wrapped up, Husted took his twin turbocharged big block to the #8 position in RVW with a 4.21 second shot in complete LDR trim, including weight. Barnett had a few minor issues in qualifying with the updates but finished off at #10 with a best of 4.30 in the single turbocharged Mopar powered and bodied Dodge Dart sitting on leaf springs. Husted made quick work of Jeff Shawver but fell to DeWayne Mills in the second round of eliminations, but not without running a career best alongside the Golden Gorilla of a 4.18 at 184 miles per hour! Anything under the 4.20 range is going to be tough to beat in the Limited Drag Radial class debut at Lights Out 9 in just a few days at South Georgia Motorsports Park. Barnett at the same fate by knocking out Keith Jackson in the opening round but falling to Mark Micke’s record breaking 215 miles per hour run, but not without posting a weekend best of 4.23 out of the Tooth Jerker owned by Jason Digby.
With Barnett and Husted getting a head start on the 2018 season, the target is already on their back before the gates ever open for the opening points race of 2018, promoted by Donald Long at the DuckX Productions team at South Georgia Motorsports Park, the drag radial spectacle of Lights Out 9.
