Race Report: Lights Out 9

The opening event in the 2018 Limited Drag Radial championship series is now completed and the end result was the same as it was so many times in 2017. Lights Out 9 is the kickoff point for most radial teams because of it’s storied history and the chance to ‘win the big one’ to kick-start your season. Donald Long and DuckX Productions has given that “big race feel” to all of their events but especially the Lights Out stable which is held at South Georgia Motorsports Park in Cecil, Georgia every February. 2018 marked the first time Limited Drag Radial was a part of the Lights Out event and the support was moving, 32 entries rocked into qualifying to give us a full field going to race day. Strange Engineering, UPR Products and MacFab Beadlocks went above and beyond the call of duty, along with DuckX Productions, to bring the fully guaranteed $5,000 to Win purse to our LDR field. Scott Husted from New Port Richey, Florida used the US Street Nationals in January to gain valuable data and used that to propel himself into the top qualifying position with a 4.16 at 186 miles per hour, one of only two cars to enter the 4.1x elapsed time range in the three sessions of qualifying. In the opening round of eliminations, there were a number of upsets including #1 qualifier Husted going down to David Pearson and #4 qualifier Ray Parsons falling to Phil Hines. Other than the #1 qualifier going down in the opening round of eliminations, the next biggest shake-up was in the quarter-finals as #27 qualifier Bill Futch took a monster holeshot win over #3 qualifier Matt Bell, who laid down low elapsed time of the event with a 4.14 but found the losing side of the time slip as Futch went 4.20 but took a large reaction time advantage. Terry Parks took his ProCharger-boosted Chevrolet Nova all the way to the finals from the #8 qualifying position while the 2017 LDR World Champion, Shane Stack, was on cruise control running 4.29, 4.19, 4.19, and 4.17 going into the final round with Parks. Stack took a slight reaction time advantage and motored away as Parks lost traction and Stack recorded yet another 4.17 elapsed time to take the win and the lead in the opening points race of the season.

Matt Bell recorded low elapsed time for the event with a 4.14, which also places him as the third quickest car in the history of the Limited Drag Radial category.

Stack was also awarded with the $5,000 LDR Points Fund from 2017, a champion’s jacket and the Mustang Mike Modeste Memorial Trophy with a replica gold chain that appeared close to Mike’s that he always wore with pride at the track. The Huntsville, Alabama based Chevrolet is packing the same twin turbocharged powerplant as last season with tuning assistance from Chris Terry at Chris Terry Race Cars and boost provided by a twin set of Precision Turbo turbochargers peeking through the fiberglass front cap of the Monte Carlo. With Stack leading off the season in the same way that he ended 2017, the ‘Thrillbilly’ will be one to watch and the one to beat if you want your hands on the 2018 LDR World Championship. The next points race on the schedule is the prestigious Holley EFI Outlaw Street Car Reunion V that is now held at Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky on April 18-22. This break of nearly two months will give everyone a chance to make necessary changes and be fully prepared for the second race in the championship series upcoming in April.
